Annuities and indexed universal life policies are among the most over-sold and over-criticized products in financial services. The truth is in the middle: used in the right situation, structured properly, and sized correctly, they solve real problems. Used carelessly, they are expensive and inflexible.

We start by asking whether one belongs in your plan at all. Most of the time, the answer is no. When the answer is yes, the design matters enormously — illustration assumptions, cap rates, surrender schedules, riders, and contribution funding all change the outcome by orders of magnitude.
